Hawaii

Big Island lava and Oahu reefs — diving off both Oahu and the Big Island, including the famous manta ray night dive.

Overview

I have dived off both Oahu and the Big Island, and Hawaii rewards doing the two properly rather than picking one. The Big Island is the headline — lava formations underwater, and the manta ray night dive, where you kneel on the bottom with a torch and the mantas barrel past you feeding on the plankton. It is one of the great dives in the world. Oahu is the easier, warmer end — reef diving straight from the shore, wrecks on the west side, and a laid-back island rhythm between dives. Together they make a proper Hawaiian dive trip.
