The Bahamas

A houseboat in a hidden creek — staying on a houseboat tucked into a creek on Andros Island.

Overview

Not every Bahamas trip has to be a resort. One of my favourite stays was a houseboat tucked into a quiet creek on Andros Island — wake up on the water, step straight into some of the clearest sea in the Caribbean, and explore the creeks and flats at your own pace. Andros is the largest and least developed of the Bahamian islands, with mangrove creeks, bonefish flats and reef edge all within reach. It is the slow, hidden end of the Bahamas, and it suits anyone who would rather watch the water than a swim-up bar.

Houseboat on Andros

Stay on a houseboat tucked into a creek — wake on the water, swim off the back, explore the flats by kayak or skiff.

Andros creeks and flats

Paddle the mangrove creeks, watch for bonefish on the flats, and snorkel the reef edge where the island meets the blue.

A sample itinerary

  1. Days 1–2

Fly into Nassau, hop to Andros, board the houseboat and settle into the creek for a first evening on the water.

  2. Days 3–5

Kayak the creeks, snorkel the reef edge, and watch the flats — days shaped entirely by the tide and the light.

  3. Day 6

A slow morning on the creek, then back to Nassau for the flight home.
